How often should I change the oil in my Ford?

Most modern Fords use the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor, which calculates your interval from actual driving conditions and calls for a change at up to 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. Towing, short trips, heat, and stop-and-go San Diego traffic shorten that. If you tow with an EcoBoost, plan on 5,000 miles. Check oil life in the cluster or the FordPass app.

Does my Ford need full synthetic oil?

Turbocharged EcoBoost engines, the 5.0L Coyote V8, and any Ford used for towing in high heat call for full synthetic. Synthetic resists thermal breakdown, protects turbo bearings, and holds up across longer drain intervals. Motorcraft® full synthetic meets Ford's WSS-M2C961-A1 specification. Your owner's manual lists the exact viscosity for your engine.

How often should I rotate my tires?

Rotate at every oil change. On a modern Ford that lands around every 7,500 to 10,000 miles, aligned with the oil-life monitor. Skipping rotations is the leading cause of premature, uneven tread wear, especially on 4WD trucks and any vehicle carrying a heavy front axle load.

Does my Ford have a timing belt or a timing chain?

Almost every current Ford engine, including the 2.7L and 3.5L EcoBoost, 5.0L Coyote, and 6.7L Power Stroke, uses a timing chain designed to last the life of the engine with no scheduled replacement. Only the small 1.0L and 1.5L EcoBoost engines use a wet belt, which does carry a replacement interval. Confirm yours by VIN.

My belt is squealing. Do I need to replace it?

A squeal usually points to a glazed, cracked, or misrouted accessory drive belt, or a failing tensioner or idler pulley. That belt drives your alternator, water pump, and A/C compressor. If it snaps, you lose charging and cooling immediately. Have it inspected. Belt replacement is inexpensive; a stranded vehicle is not.

What does the check engine light mean on my Ford?

It means the powertrain control module has stored a diagnostic trouble code from one of dozens of sensors monitoring engine performance and emissions. A steady light means get it diagnosed soon. A flashing light means an active misfire that can destroy your catalytic converter: stop driving and call us. In California, an illuminated MIL is an automatic smog check failure.

What should I do if my Ford overheats?

Pull over safely and shut the engine off immediately. Sustained overheating warps heads and destroys gaskets. Do not open the radiator cap or coolant reservoir: the system is pressurized and will spray scalding coolant. Let it cool completely, then have the vehicle towed. Continuing to drive turns a hose repair into an engine replacement.

Why is my engine oil milky or light brown?

Milky oil means coolant is mixing with oil, typically from a failed head gasket, a cracked head or block, or a failed oil cooler. Coolant destroys bearing surfaces fast. Stop driving the vehicle and have it inspected immediately. Condensation from repeated short trips can mimic this, which is exactly why it needs a professional diagnosis rather than a guess.

When do Ford spark plugs need replacing?

Roughly every 60,000 miles on most EcoBoost engines, and longer on some naturally aspirated engines. The interval is engine-specific, so we confirm by VIN rather than guessing. Worn plugs cause misfires, rough idle, hard starts, and lost fuel economy. On direct-injected turbo engines, running plugs past interval also risks coil failure.

When does my Ford fuel filter need service?

On a gas-powered Ford, the fuel filter is integrated into the in-tank pump module and is not a routine maintenance item. On a 6.7L Power Stroke Super Duty, the fuel filters are serviceable and are a scheduled item. Diesel fuel filter neglect is one of the fastest ways to destroy a high-pressure fuel system.

How do I keep my battery connection healthy?

Clean, inspect, and torque the terminals periodically. Corrosion at the post creates resistance that starves the starter and confuses modules, which often surfaces as a phantom electrical fault rather than an obvious dead battery. Southern California heat also shortens battery life. We test batteries at no charge with any service visit.

Do I have to service at a Ford dealer to keep my warranty?

No. Federal law protects your right to service elsewhere. But warranty and recall work must be performed by an authorized Ford dealer to be covered, and using genuine Ford and Motorcraft® parts removes any argument over whether a part caused a failure. We keep your service history tied to your VIN in Ford's system.
